CarbonCode — C++ IDE
A desktop C++ IDE built with <strong>Electron, React & Monaco Editor</strong>, featuring offline support so you can write, run and debug without a connection.
Overview
CarbonCode is a desktop C++ IDE that I built from the ground up using Electron, React, and the Monaco Editor — the same editor engine that powers Visual Studio Code. My goal was to create a lightweight, distraction-free environment where beginners and intermediate developers can write, compile, and run C++ code without the complexity of configuring heavyweight IDEs like Visual Studio or CLion.
What makes CarbonCode stand out is its fully offline capability. Once installed, you don't need an internet connection to write and execute your programs — perfect for students in environments with limited connectivity or developers who prefer working without distractions.
Key Features
- Monaco-Powered Editor — IntelliSense-style autocomplete, syntax highlighting, bracket matching, and multi-cursor editing right out of the box.
- One-Click Compile & Run — Hit a single button to compile your C++ source and see the output in an integrated terminal. No manual command-line setup required.
- Offline-First Architecture — The entire toolchain is bundled locally, so you can code on flights, in classrooms, or anywhere without Wi-Fi.
- Clean, Modern Interface — A minimal dark-themed UI designed to keep the focus on your code, not the IDE itself.
- Cross-Platform — Built on Electron, CarbonCode runs seamlessly on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Tech Stack
I chose Electron for cross-platform desktop packaging, React for the component-driven UI, and Monaco Editor for the professional-grade code editing experience. The build pipeline uses Node.js to bundle and compile the native C++ toolchain alongside the application.
Problem it solves
Setting up a full C++ development environment is overwhelming for beginners. CarbonCode eliminates the friction by bundling everything into a single, offline-ready desktop application.
How it was built
Built with Electron for cross-platform packaging, React for the UI layer, and Monaco Editor for the code editing experience. Compiles C++ locally via a bundled toolchain.
